OUR EVENTS
HIGH JUMP
High jump in high school track and field is an event where athletes try to clear a horizontal bar set at a certain height, using a running start and jumping over it. The goal is to jump as high as possible without knocking the bar down.
The approach involves sprinting down a runway toward the bar, and then executing a jump where the athlete uses a technique called the "Fosbury Flop" (the most common method today). In this technique, the jumper runs at the bar at an angle, then leaps backward over it, arching their back and kicking their legs up and over the bar in a fluid motion. This allows them to clear higher heights compared to older techniques, like the scissor kick, which is still used by some beginners.
The height of the bar increases during the competition, and athletes have three attempts to clear each height. If they knock the bar off the stand with any part of their body or fail to clear the height after three tries, they're out for that height. The athlete who clears the highest height wins the event.
In high school, the heights athletes clear depend on their experience and skill level. Beginners may start with lower heights, while experienced vaulters will be competing for higher and higher bars, pushing themselves to jump as high as they can.
It’s one of the most thrilling events to watch because it’s all about explosive power, technique, and timing. Plus, it can be pretty dramatic when someone clears a bar by just a fraction of an inch or when an athlete pushes themselves to break a personal record.

POLE VAULT
Pole Vault
Pole vaulting in high school is an event in track and field where athletes run down a runway, plant a flexible pole into a box, and use it to propel themselves over a high bar. The goal is to clear the bar without knocking it down, and the height of the bar increases as the competition goes on. The vault itself involves a combination of speed, strength, technique, and timing.
The pole is usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber, and athletes choose a pole based on their weight, strength, and experience. The technique involves sprinting down the runway, planting the pole into a special box at the end of the runway, and using the pole to catapult themselves into the air, twisting their body over the bar.
At the high school level, athletes typically start with lower heights and progressively try higher vaults as they develop their skills. It’s a pretty exciting event to watch because the vault requires a lot of athleticism, and every attempt can look different depending on the athlete’s form and the conditions.
The event’s known for being challenging since it combines speed, technique, and fearlessness. It also has a unique blend of gymnastics-like elements (with the flip over the bar) and strength (with the pole’s powerful spring).

SHOT PUT
Shot put in high school track and field is an event where athletes throw a heavy spherical object, called a shot, as far as possible. The shot weighs 8.8 pounds for females and 12 pounds for males. The athlete stands in a 2.134m diameter circle and "puts" (pushes) the shot from their neck or shoulder using one hand. The goal is to throw the shot the greatest distance, with each athlete getting three attempts. The event requires strength, technique, and explosive power, particularly in the legs, hips, and upper body. The longest valid throw wins.
Our shot put field received an upgrade for the 2025 season and is now enclosed with a border and filled with gravel and is no longer on the uneven grass field it was previously! If you're interested in trying shot put (both girls and boys!!) please let the coach know. Your schedule may differ from the running practice schedule and we'd love to have you come try this event!

DISCUS
Discus in high school track and field is an event where athletes throw a heavy, flat, circular object called a discus as far as possible. The discus itself weighs 2.2 pounds for females and 3.5 pounds for males and is shaped like a 3D frisbee. The athlete spins in a circle within an 2.5m diameter ring, building momentum, and then releases the discus with a flick of the wrist. The goal is to throw the discus into a designated sector (a wide area) as far as possible. Each athlete gets three attempts, and the longest valid throw wins. It requires a mix of strength, technique, and timing to get the discus to fly the farthest.
Our discus area received an upgrade for the 2025 season with turf surrounding the 2.5m concrete ring, a gravel border for better drainage and a brand new net! If you're interested in trying the discus event, please let the coach know! You can participate on the team and not run if you only want to participate in shot put and/or discus!

The long jump in high school track and field is a field event where athletes sprint down a runway and leap into a sandpit, aiming to achieve the longest possible jump. The jump is measured from the edge of the takeoff board closest to the sandpit to the nearest mark made in the sand by any part of the athlete's body. It combines speed, strength, and technique, making it both a power and skill-based event.

LONG JUMP
TRIPLE JUMP
The triple jump in high school track and field is a field event where athletes perform a sequence of three distinct phases: a hop, a step, and a jump. Starting with a sprint down a runway, the athlete takes off from a designated takeoff board. The first phase (hop) involves landing on the same foot used for takeoff, the second phase (step) switches to the opposite foot, and the final phase (jump) launches into the sandpit. The goal is to achieve the longest total distance across all three phases.

HURDLES
In high school track and field, hurdling is a sprint event where athletes run over a series of evenly spaced obstacles called hurdles. The goal is to clear each hurdle efficiently while maintaining speed and rhythm. Common high school hurdling events include the 100-meter hurdles for girls, the 110-meter hurdles for boys, and the 300-meter hurdles for both. It requires a combination of speed, agility, and technique.
Thanks to our incredible sponsors and fundraising, we were able to purchase a full brand new set of hurdles for our team in 2024. In addition, we were able to purchase the wheeled storage and transportation carts for the hurdles so they could easily be moved from ones side of the track to the other. This was a huge investment for our program and we are excited to showcase these new hurdles at our home meets while our athletes get to practice with them weekly.

RUNNING
SPRINTS
In track and field, sprints are short-distance races that prioritize speed and explosive power:

100 meters: The shortest sprint, run on a straight portion of the track. It’s a pure test of acceleration and top-end speed.

200 meters: A half-lap sprint starting on a curve and finishing on a straightaway. It combines speed with the ability to maintain momentum around the curve.

400 meters: A full-lap sprint requiring both speed and endurance. Often considered the most demanding sprint, it challenges an athlete’s ability to sustain a fast pace over a longer distance.
Each distance emphasizes slightly different aspects of an athlete’s sprinting abilities, from raw explosiveness to endurance.
